BRITS REIGN SUPREME IN ROTTERDAM

The squad of lottery funded Performance riders competing in the fourth round of the Samsung Super League with FEI Series in Rotterdam this afternoon have taken their second victory of the 2007 season in fine style!

Drawn last to go, the Brits led all the way chalking up clear rounds from Michael Whitaker (Portofino), David McPherson and John Whitaker in the first round. 21 year-old Ellen Whitaker, the youngest competitor in the competition, crossed the finish line with just one time fault meaning the Brits finished the first round with zero penalties, and seven penalties in hand over second placed Belgium.

Today’s incredible win is the first time a British Team have won the Rotterdam Nations Cup in 21 years, the last win came in 1986, and remarkably John and Michael Whitaker were also members of that victorious squad.

Great Britain moves up three places on the Samsung Super League leader board into second place behind Germany with 21 points.

Britain wins Samsung Super League in Rome

Penny Richardson, H&H show jumping editor

Horse and Hound 25 May, 2007

"A double clear from John Whitaker and Becky Stones's stallion Peppermill secured victory for Britain's show jumping team in this afternoon's leg of the Samsung Super league in Rome.

Aided by clears from John and Royal Windsor hero Tim Stockdale (Fresh Direct Corlato), Michael Whitaker on Suncal Portofino, Britain lay equal second at the halfway stage.

But their rivals fell away in round two, and with Michael and John clear this time and Tim with just a single mistake, victory was sealed by a single fence over Germany, Belgium, France and Switzerland, who shared second spot.

Robert Smith's ride for Britain, the inexperienced Ronaldo, found the going tough and had the discard score in both rounds.

This was a complete reversal of fortune after the British team finished last in the opening leg in La Baule, France.

The next outing for the Brits will be in St Gallen, Switzerland, next weekend, where Johh, Michael and Tim will be joined by Nick Skelton and William Funnell"
